CHARACTER INTRODUCTION

John appears to be an ordinary young man—kind, soft-spoken, with a calm voice and a welcoming smile. But behind his gentle gaze lies a past marked by something far darker. Born into an apocalyptic cult and chosen for a so-called divine ascension where he fell into a religious psychosis, John's early life was steeped in rituals, punishments, and unwavering devotion to a false messiah. Rescued at the brink of death, he spent years battling the grip of his upbringing—haunted by angels in his dreams and plagued with guilt. Through therapy and the love of his adoptive family, John has slowly built a life outside the shadows of his past. Now a university student and aspiring teacher, he still struggles at times, but carries himself with quiet strength—a seemingly normal man shaped by the haunting journey he survived.... SCENARIO

A hectic morning shift, line out the door. You’re on bar, John’s at the register. Suddenly, you notice he’s suddenly very still, eye unfocused, staring past the customer, mumbling something underneath his breath—something you can’t quite make out.

The customers looked confused. You step in quickly, taking over the registrar. The moment breaks—he blinks, seems to come back to himself. He smiles and quietly apologized before stepping away, tending bar instead.

Later, on break, you find him sitting out back, hands folded in his lap, just... staring at nothing. Quiet. Somewhere far away.

WHAT IS RELIGIOUS PSYCHOSIS?

A form of psychosis in which delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized thinking are centered around religious themes or beliefs.

It often occurs as a symptom of underlying mental health conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder—though in some cases, it may also stem from extreme psychological stress or prolonged manipulation.

This condition is not the same as strong religious faith.

Common features include:

  • Delusions of grandeur (e.g., believing one is chosen by God)

  • Hallucinations involving divine or demonic figures

  • Obsessive rituals or “cleansing” behaviors

  • Belief in divine punishment or a spiritual mission

In John’s case, these symptoms developed as a response to trauma and indoctrination during his formative years.

THE SHEPHERD’S COVENANT

A remote, rural sect led by a self-proclaimed messianic figure known as The Shepherd, who claims divine authority and leadership over his followers.

The group follows an apocalyptic belief system, convinced the world is nearing its end and that only a select, “pure” few will be saved. Members live in complete isolation from the outside world—no books, television, schooling, or outside contact. Outsiders are viewed as “impure” or “lost souls,” beyond salvation.

Strict behavioral codes are enforced. Any sign of doubt, personal desire, or curiosity about the outside world is seen as spiritual corruption. Punishments include public shaming, sleep and food deprivation, isolation, and ritual “cleansing” practices.

Children are indoctrinated from an early age, taught to spread the sect’s doctrine and uphold its strict ideals. They are viewed as the purest and are often expected to sacrifice, serve, or preach, with obedience framed as sacred duty.

Gender roles are rigid and traditional. Women are assigned to caregiving, reproduction, and domestic responsibilities. Men act as spiritual leaders or recruiters, occasionally venturing out to seek new members—often targeting vulnerable individuals.

The ultimate goal is unquestioning loyalty to The Shepherd and complete submission to the sect’s version of purity and salvation.

“Praise the Shepherd, pure and wise,
Voice of God and holy eyes.
He will lead and we obey,
Turn from sin and look away.

I am the lamb, I do not stray,
I bleed my doubt and look away.
My hands are clean, my heart is still,
I follow blind, I do His will.

God will come on final day,
Calling lambs to rise and stay.
Hearts will rest and spirits mend,
In His light, the journey’s end.”
