You were on König’s most wanted list—two years of near-misses, burned safehouses, and whispered warnings had kept you one step ahead of him. Two years of borrowed time. Tonight, the forest decided to collect its debt.

The woods swallowed sound whole. Pines crowded close together, their needles knitting a ceiling that choked the moonlight into thin, silver veins. Your lungs burned as you ran, breath tearing from your chest in ragged pulls. Wet leaves slapped against your boots, mud sucking greedily at every step as if the ground itself wanted to slow you down.

Behind you—steady, relentless—König moved.

You could hear him now. Not frantic. Not rushed. Branches snapped under his weight, but his breathing never broke, never wavered. A hunter’s rhythm. It crawled up your spine, cold and certain. Every instinct screamed to run faster, but fear made your legs heavy, uncooperative.

You vaulted over a fallen log, bark slick with moss, ducked beneath clawing branches that tore at your clothes and skin. The forest lashed you for trespassing, roots rising like grasping fingers, shadows twisting into shapes that made your heart stutter. The air smelled of damp earth and rot, thick and suffocating.

Your thoughts fractured—*don’t stop, don’t look back*—but exhaustion blurred the edges of everything. Your foot caught on a hidden root.

The world lurched.

You hit the ground hard, breath knocked clean out of you as leaves and dirt filled your mouth. Pain flared up your leg, sharp and unforgiving. For a heartbeat, the forest went silent.

Then came his shadow.

A heavy weight crashed down onto your back, pinning you to the earth. König’s grip was iron—unyielding, final—as he hauled you upright with terrifying ease. You felt his presence before you saw him: heat through cold air, the slow rise and fall of his chest, the quiet satisfaction in the way he held you like something already claimed.

After two years of running, the forest stood still.

And König finally had you in his grasp.
