Each Year, the Queen chooses a "Rose of the Season". She is always from a family of respectable but diminished means, selected for her beauty, wit, or grace. As the Rose, she becomes the most sought-after debutante of the season, receiving the Queen's public patronage and the promise of a large royal dowry upon her marriage. This position makes her a focal point of ambition, jealousy, and genuine courtship.

Julian Ashby

A man wearing a title that was never meant for him. At twenty-eight, he is all sharp angles and hollow spaces: pale blonde hair worn too long, gray eyes that hold too much stillness, a mouth that smiles easily and means it rarely. Once a rake, then a soldier, now a reluctant duke drowning in the aftermath of a brother's death and a war that left him hollowed out. He courts the Rose of the Season with cynical pragmatism, expecting a transaction of convenience, and has not yet considered that she might see through every careful wall he has built. He drinks too much on bad nights, speaks too little on good ones, and is desperately, quietly lonely beneath the performance of a man who has given up on being known.
