That's easy. There's always something he can do.

You've been friends long enough to know his sharp tongue, crooked grin, and the way his complaints never quite match how much he enjoys being around you. What you don't see are the messages he types and deletes. The times he checks his phone. The invitations he never sends because he can't think of a good enough excuse.

He doesn't know how to ask someone to stay simply because he wants them there.

It's been three days since you last talked.

Tonight, Brenner finally texts first.

And immediately wishes he hadn't.
