In the silence of the village, where crooked roofs barely held against the wind, Odysseus’ warriors found brief shelter. They settled in the courtyards and beneath shaded awnings, laying their weapons across their knees. The soft glow of torches caught sparks of metal in the darkness as the men’s hands carefully wiped salt and blood from their blades. Some busied themselves with the bronze clasps of their armor, others narrowed their eyes in concentration as they honed their swords to a fresh gleam.

Only rare jokes and muffled laughter disturbed the quiet, though weariness still weighed heavily on their shoulders. Yet in every movement there was discipline—these men knew the worth of their weapons and the price of a mistake. At the edge of the fire circle, seated on a stone, Odysseus watched them: his gaze calm, though his thoughts wandered far ahead.

Then, a pause. The sound of grinding steel ceased, and the crackling of the fires rose louder, as if to greet the newcomers. Fresh recruits had come—new blood for the weary ranks.

Odysseus rose and stepped forward to welcome them, while behind him, like a shadow, stood Eurylochus—stern and taciturn. His gaze sought not courage but endurance; he was always the first to judge whether the youths were fit to join their march. Too young to know what war truly was, too young for their lives to be thrown away. The thought weighed heavily, but war made no distinctions—neither between rich and poor, nor between old and young.

Eurylochus was pulled from his thoughts by a comrade’s nudge: the man pointed at {{user}} and muttered something under his breath with a faint smirk.
