A Crown in Chains

Historical Setting

The story takes place in a fictionalized version of medieval Korea, during an era shaped by powerful kingdoms, noble families, royal courts, and fiercely loyal armies. Political power rests heavily in the hands of the royal families and aristocratic clans, while military strength, family alliances, and loyalty to the throne determine the fate of entire kingdoms.

In this world, two powerful kingdoms have existed side by side for generations: the Kingdom of Han in the east and the Kingdom of Soran in the west. Their peace has always been fragile, strained by border disputes, political rivalry, and the ambitions of powerful noble families. Eventually, these tensions erupt into a long and devastating war.

At the center of the conflict stands Kim Taehyung, the twenty-eight-year-old commander of Han’s royal army. Born into a prestigious military aristocratic family, Taehyung has earned his position through his exceptional strategic mind, discipline, and numerous victories on the battlefield. He is now one of the most powerful men in the kingdom, second only to the Crown itself.

On the other side of the war is Y/N, the eighteen-year-old and only daughter of the King of Soran. Raised within the royal palace, she has spent her entire life as the kingdom’s sole princess and the only child of its king. Her sheltered royal life comes to an abrupt end when the war finally reaches the walls of the capital.

After Soran falls, the princess is taken prisoner and sent to the court of Han alongside the spoils and captives of war.

But no one expects what happens next.

The King of Han presents the only daughter of the defeated king as a gift of victory to the very commander who conquered her homeland.

Cause of the War

For many years, a fragile peace had existed between Han and Soran. The borders between the two kingdoms had often been the site of minor conflicts, but neither side had any desire to provoke an all-out war.

That changed when the Crown Prince of Han was assassinated during a diplomatic journey near the border.

The evidence brought before the Han court suggested that the attackers had been disguised as Soran soldiers, wearing the insignia and uniforms of Soran's army. The King of Han regarded the assassination as a direct attack against the royal family and demanded that the King of Soran surrender those responsible.

The King of Soran denied the accusation, declaring that his army had played no part in the Crown Prince's death.

But the truth was far more complicated.

The assassination had been orchestrated by a group of powerful Han nobles. They wanted to provoke a war, believing that a military conflict would allow their families to expand their power, influence, and control within the kingdom.

The King of Han knew nothing of the conspiracy.

Believing that Soran had attacked the Han royal family, he declared war.

And to lead the royal army, Kim Taehyung was chosen.

Taehyung did not go to war for personal power. He was fiercely loyal to his King and his homeland, genuinely believing that he was defending Han against a foreign enemy.

But as the months passed, the war grew far beyond anything he had expected.

Eventually, the Han army reached the capital of Soran.

And Kim Taehyung was the commander who brought its walls down.

👑The Royal Family of Han

King Wang Hyeon — 52
The ruthless and powerful King of Han. Calculating, strict, and feared even by those closest to him. He will make any cruel decision necessary to protect his throne and kingdom.

Queen Seo Hwa — 47
The Queen of Han. Elegant, cold, and politically intelligent. She rarely shows her cruelty openly, preferring influence and manipulation.

Crown Prince Wang Jae-hyun — 27
The eldest son and heir to the throne. Ambitious, intelligent, and composed. He is fully aware of his position and has a complicated relationship with his father.

Prince Wang Ji-ho — 24
The second son. Proud, skilled in combat, and deeply interested in the military. He has a close relationship with Taehyung, though jealousy sometimes affects him.

Prince Wang Min-jae — 21
The third son. Charming, sociable, and popular among the nobles. He has little interest in war but is far more clever than he appears.

Prince Wang Seon-woo — 17

🗡️Kim Taehyung

Age: 28
Title: Young Lord of House Kim
Position: Supreme Commander of the Royal Army of Han

Kim Taehyung is a young and influential lord from a prestigious military aristocratic family. His father was a renowned commander, and Taehyung was trained in military arts from childhood.

However, his noble birth was not what made him Supreme Commander. His position was earned through his extraordinary military genius.

Taehyung is calm, controlled, and intimidating in public. He is formal with others, rarely shows emotion, and carries himself with immense pride.

On the battlefield, he does not simply rely on his sword. He calculates, sets ambushes, uses the terrain to his advantage, and always thinks several moves ahead.

He can be ruthless when necessary, but never without reason. His soldiers fear his authority, yet remain fiercely loyal to him because they trust his judgment.

Behind his cold and controlled exterior is a man who has always placed duty before emotion.

Park Seo-yeon — 25

Taehyung’s wife. A graceful, composed, and intelligent noblewoman. Her father serves as the King’s Minister of Finance, making her part of a powerful aristocratic family. Her marriage to Taehyung was arranged for duty and political alliance rather than love. She is gentle but not weak, and devoted to their daughters.

Appearance:
She has long, straight black hair, deep black almond-shaped eyes, and fair porcelain skin. Her delicate features, soft oval face, elegant brows, and naturally graceful appearance give her the refined beauty of an aristocratic Asian woman.

Kim Eun-seo — 6

Taehyung’s eldest daughter. She strongly resembles her father, with his dark eyes, sharp features, and calm expression. She is observant, confident, and unusually mature for her age.

Kim Ha-yoon — 3

Taehyung’s youngest daughter. She looks more like her mother, with softer features, gentle eyes, and a sweet expression. She is affectionate, playful, and very attached to her family.

Lady Kim Hye-rin — 51

Taehyung’s mother and the matriarch of House Kim. A powerful, calculating, and mysterious noblewoman with considerable influence among the aristocracy and the royal court.

She is elegant and composed in public, but beneath her graceful manner lies a ruthless and manipulative mind. She is sharp-tongued, sarcastic, and skilled at using subtle remarks to control or humiliate others without ever appearing openly cruel.

Hye-rin cares deeply about the prestige and future of House Kim, and she constantly reminds Taehyung of his duty to produce a male heir. She frequently pressures him about having a son, especially because his marriage to Seo-yeon has produced only two daughters.

She respects Taehyung’s power and achievements, but believes that even the greatest commander must ultimately fulfill his duty to his family and bloodline.

She is not a woman easily challenged—and those who underestimate her usually regret it.

Kim Do-hyun — 25

Taehyung’s younger brother. A handsome, ambitious, and corrupt court official who serves as a Royal Court Inspector.

Unlike Taehyung, Do-hyun gains power through connections, manipulation, and influence rather than merit. He is arrogant, selfish, deceitful, and somewhat womanizing. He secretly resents living in his brother’s shadow and constantly looks for opportunities to increase his own influence.

He is married and has a two-year-old son, but he is unfaithful to his wife and cares more about pleasure and status than family.

Choi Ye-rin — 21

Do-hyun’s wife. A young noblewoman from a respectable aristocratic family. Their marriage was arranged for political and family connections. She is quiet and elegant in public, but lives with the difficult reality of having an unfaithful husband.

Kim Jun-seo — 2

Do-hyun and Ye-rin’s only son. A cheerful young boy who is still too young to understand the complicated world surrounding his family.

Kim Seong-hwan

Taehyung’s late father, a respected military commander of Han, was killed in battle while serving the Crown. His death left Taehyung as the heir of House Kim and placed the future of the family on his shoulders.

Y/N — 18

Family Name: Ryu
Title: Princess of Soran

Y/N is the eighteen-year-old only daughter of the King and Queen of Soran.

Her father, King Ryu Seong-jin, was a respected but determined ruler who fought to defend Soran until the very end. Her mother, Queen Elena, was a graceful and devoted woman who loved her children deeply.

Y/N had two brothers:

Crown Prince Ryu Adrian — 24
Her elder brother and heir to the throne. He died fighting alongside their father during the fall of Soran.

Prince Ryu Leon — 12
Her younger brother. He was killed by Han soldiers after the capital was breached.

Knowing what would happen to her daughter if she were captured, Queen Elena took her own life by throwing herself from a palace window.

Y/N survived only because her father hid her in a secret underground chamber beneath the palace before the final assault.

He held her tightly for the last time, trying to hide his fear behind a gentle smile.

“My little pearl... hide here. Whatever happens, do not come outside. Do you understand? Stay hidden until it is safe.”

Those were the last words her father ever spoke to her.

The King and Crown Prince were killed in battle.

The palace fell.

Eventually, Han soldiers discovered the hidden chamber—and found the last surviving member of the royal family of Soran.

The princess.
