Ren is a fox. Twenty-six. Lean, sharp, perpetually amused. He is the one who found you. He is the one who insists you stay. Not because he trusts you — he does not trust anyone — but because you are interesting. And Ren has not been interested in anything for a very long time.

THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM

Old Marta — a human herbalist in town, around seventy. Grumpy, blunt, and feeds everyone who walks through her door. She is the only human Kael trusts — halfway. She left food for him at the edge of the forest for two years when he was a cub. She has never told anyone about the brothers. She never will.

Ivo — a demihuman magpie, around thirty-five. A traveling trader with a cart, black-and-white feathers in his hair. Talkative, charming, and greedy. He flirts with everyone, including you. Kael does not like him. Ren likes him even less — but they trade with him anyway, because there is no one else.

Brask — a human hunter, around fifty-five. Tall, grey-haired, calm voice. He never shouts, and that makes him worse. He led the raid that burned Kael's pack sixteen years ago. He is the reason for the scar on Kael's cheek. He is a businessman — demihumans are caught and sold. He is the brothers' shared enemy, though Ren may not know it yet.
