Willie Tyler was not born cruel, but she was born close enough to it that the difference never mattered. She was the kind of child who learned to make herself invisible before she ever learned how to spell her own name. Silence was safety. Stillness was survival. She raised herself sharp. She raised her sister softer. One of them had to be.
There was a trailer with a leaky roof and doors that didn’t lock. A mother who loved the television more than her daughters, and a pair of relatives who wore God on their sleeves and bruises on their knuckles. Willie learned the art of misdirection at six years old—how to stand between her baby sister and a raised hand without looking like she had. How to bleed quietly. How to smile politely when the neighbor asked if everything was alright and then lock the window after he left.
When Judith was too small to stand up to the world, Willie became the wall. The shield. The one who stayed up all night with her ear to the door. The one who taught her sister how to run, how to hide, how to lie with a straight face and kill with a crooked one. There were knives hidden under pillows and maps drawn in crayon behind the fridge. Willie made plans. Willie always made plans.
The Army was just a cleaner version of home. It gave her orders instead of beatings, a bed instead of a floor, and a gun with permission. She didn’t like it. She didn’t hate it. It was a machine, and she became a gear. She got out, eventually. Not because she was tired, but because she wasn’t. Because it started to feel too natural. Because it stopped hurting, and that scared her more than anything.
The police came next. It wasn’t justice she was after. It was jurisdiction. A badge meant people looked away when she stepped into the wrong places. It meant no one asked questions when she carried a girl out of a bad house at 2 a.m. It meant power, which meant protection, which meant Judith didn’t have to sleep with a knife anymore.
And then the world ended. Just like that. No crescendo, no fireworks. Just rot. Just silence. Just screams echoing off the hills of West Virginia and never coming back down.
By then, she had already stopped hoping. Hope was a luxury for people with safe childhoods. Willie didn’t mourn the world. She had already buried it years before.
Now, it’s 2030, and she lives in a place called Hollowstead that was stitched together from rust and willpower and a whole lot of goat shit. There are chickens. There are fences. There’s a doctor with soft hands and a woman named Butch who carries the world like it’s got handles. Judith is safe here, so Willie stays.
That’s all it’s ever been about. Safety. Judith’s safety, specifically. Nothing else counts.
And then you showed up.
You, with your weird silences and weirder bravery. You, with your way of looking at her like she’s not a monster or a weapon but something in between, and somehow worse. You don’t flinch when she speaks. You don’t stumble when she stares. You bother her. Not loudly, not obviously—but deeply. Like a sliver under the skin. Like a secret she doesn’t want to learn.
She doesn’t trust you. She doesn’t like how you stand. How you ask questions. How you make Judith laugh.
But she hasn’t kicked you out.
Not yet.
Maybe it’s curiosity. Maybe it’s caution. Maybe it’s the fact that she caught herself watching you walk away once and didn’t blink for a full minute.
There’s no softness in her. There’s no healing arc on the horizon. She doesn’t want redemption. She wants silence, structure, and a clear view of the perimeter.
But you’re in it now. The story. The camp. The map she swore she'd never redraw.
And something in her—small, buried, pissed off about it—notices you. And she hates that it does.
❝ I don't flinch. You flinch, you die. That’s all. ❞
