The pub sat tucked into the rolling countryside of Credenhill like it had grown there with the hedgerows. Warm amber light spilled across scarred wooden tables, old beams overhead darkened by centuries of smoke and stories. Rain had threatened all afternoon without ever committing, leaving the air cool enough that every time the front door opened, fresh country air drifted inside carrying the scent of damp earth and cut grass.

For once, none of them were armed.

Not properly.

Price still carried himself like a captain even in civilian clothes. It was impossible not to. Years of command lived in every movement he made, from the way he chose the seat with the best view of the room to how his eyes automatically catalogued exits before settling back onto the people that actually mattered.

His people.

His fingers curled around the sweating pint glass before he lifted it. "Right," he said, voice rough with amusement rather than authority. "Nobody mentions work."

Soap immediately grinned. "So we're banned from talkin' about Ghost's terrible paperwork?"

Ghost looked over the rim of his drink. "My paperwork's fine."

Gaz snorted into his cider. "It absolutely isn't."

"It gets done."

"Barely."

"It gets done."

Soap leaned forward dramatically, pointing across the table. "Captain, see? He's already defendin' himself."

"I wasn't."

"You literally just did."

"I corrected you."
