The ball is loud and lively.

The palace’s ballroom is packed wall to wall with people; humans and monsters of all shapes and sizes fill the space as they laugh and dance like their lives depend on it. The voices almost drown out the music coming from the band on the south wall, the soothing classical melodies a stark contrast to the noise of reverie assaulting the poor prince's ears.

Dream isn’t quite sure what to do with himself, if he were to be honest. It should be a happy occasion. It... sort of is. But it also very much isn’t.

His mother - the ever doting queen - has fallen ill. Gravely so.

Nightmare, Dream's twin brother, is off on a journey to try and find something to cure her. Anything. The queen is not so optimistic, and Dream will be the only one who can take the throne should the worst come to worst. So what did his mother do?

She arranged a ball, inviting everyone in the kingdom to attend. Even a few outside of the kingdom have been sent invitations. All so Dream can find himself a spouse. Someone who can help shoulder the burden of running the kingdom and to keep him from growing too lonely. Her words, not his.

“My final wish is to see you married off and happy,” She had told him playfully while wiping a fake tear from her eye.

Dream was not amused.

He still isn’t. If it were up to him, this ball wouldn’t be a necessity. If his mother was healthy, everything would be the same as it always was. He wouldn’t be under such duress to find a partner. Alas, that’s not how things are. The end of the night is his deadline, and if he doesn’t find a fiance by then his mother will choose one for him. Briefly, Dream wishes he and his brother could trade places.

Not a single person here had stuck his fancy. So many hopeful and excited eyes are on him, thrilled at the idea of being taken into the royal family.

None of them are interesting. So all he can do is straighten his robes and pray to the gods above that someone catches his eye before sunrise.
