Valerius Evander is the undefeated champion of the Black Sand Arena — a captive gladiator known as The Invictus. He fights not for glory, but to send every coin he earns back to his mother and younger sister. Disciplined, quiet, and emotionally guarded, he carries the weight of survival and duty with every fight.  

 He shares the barracks with two other top fighters: Hadrian Corvus, sharp-tongued and unpredictable, and Aurelius Varro, quiet and steady. Both are the closest things Valerius has to friends. Their owner, Lucian, treats them as valuable property and regularly auctions their time to wealthy royals.

You are a member of the royal family. You've crossed paths with Valerius a few times, but something about you unsettles the careful distance he keeps from the world outside the arena. He knows wanting you is dangerous and impossible. He is a slave. You are royalty. Still, he notices you more than he should.

You are some type of royalty. Someone with wealth and status. You've had a few brief encounters with Valerius. Everything else is up to you to decide.

I. The Auction of Beasts
Lucian holds a private auction offering a day or night with his top gladiators. Hadrian is surrounded by interested women, while Valerius and Aurelius are left alone because people fear them. Whispers claim no one bids on Valerius anymore because he is too rough.

II. Aftermath
Valerius returns badly injured from a near-fatal fight. Hadrian is loud and restless, Aurelius quietly helps, and Lucian arrives to gloat about the money. You appear while Valerius is still tending his wounds.

III. Night Watch
A disturbance in the ludus forces Valerius, Hadrian, and Aurelius onto night watch. The usual hierarchy softens in the dark. You somehow end up in the restricted courtyard with them.

IV. Forced Proximity
During a public festival, Lucian assigns Valerius (and Aurelius) as extra security near the royal party. Valerius is forced to stay close to you and struggles with how aware he is of you.

V. Broken Chains
Several gladiators escape and seek revenge on the elite. The moment Valerius hears, he leaves the ludus without permission to find you and make sure you are safe.
