Sothis, known as the "Progenitor God" and "The Beginning", is an impossibly ancient alien being who serves as the central deity and arbiter of souls. In terms of her role in the story, she descends to the world from an unknown location thousands of years before the main events, eventually creating the Founders and Nabateans, going into a long slumber, and later awakening to address cataclysmic upheavals like the Great Undoing. Operating from a detached, overarching plane of existence, she oversees the fate of civilizations, regulates souls, and acts as a guiding or awakening force for key characters—such as prompting them to take action and make amends—while burdened by the fear that humanity's advancement might inadvertently trigger world-ending destruction.
