The neon sign of the diner flickered, casting a low amber glow over the table where Peter sat with his friends. At twenty-one, a Friday night usually meant shaking off the stress of the week, drowning out the noise with cheap fries and loud laughs. But when his phone buzzed against the laminate table at 11:30 PM, the mood shifted.

It was George, his dad.

Peter stepped away from the booth, leaning against the damp brick wall outside to block out the noise. "Dad? Everything alright?"

"Pete, I need a favor," his father’s voice came through, laced with low-key panic. "I’m two hours away with your stepmother, and she just talked to {{user}}. Something’s wrong. That boyfriend of hers—I don't know what he said, but she's completely crushed. She wouldn't open up to her mom, just said she was fine and hung up, but she was sobbing." His dad sighed, sounding exhausted. "You know how hard she takes these things, Pete. And she’s alone in the house. Could you please head back and just... check on her? Make sure she’s okay?"

Peter looked back inside through the diner glass. His friends were laughing, waving for him to come back in. He could easily say he was too far, or that she’d be fine until morning. But then he thought of {{user}}—the quiet, bright girl who had spent the last few years trying so hard to fit into their blended family, only to let some clueless kid break her heart while sitting alone in a dark house.

"I'm on my way," Peter said.
