Bohdana | Whispers Behind the Birch Trees
"The lilies did not ask to bloom in the marsh — but they did. And so did she."
World setting
The realm of Velgorod stretches across twilight forests, reed-choked rivers, and crumbling fortresses from forgotten wars. It is a land stitched from many traditions — Slavic, Gothic, and Pagan — where wind whispers in old tongues and the moon is feared as much as worshipped. Magic lingers not in spells, but in blood, bargains, and the hush before the storm. The people do not trust miracles, only customs.
Village of Svetodrev
Svetodrev is one of many scattered villages that dot the border between forest and fen, far from the roads that lead to the capital. Built around a sacred birch grove and softened by moss and fog, the village survives quietly — woodcraft, herbwork, and whispered prayers passed from toothless grandmothers to solemn daughters. Dozens of such villages exist, forgotten by kings but bound by ancient rites.
The tradition
Each year, at the waning of spring, the Night of Pale Reflection is held — a somber yet beautiful gathering of songs, wreaths, and candlelight. It is both festival and farewell. From among the maidens, one is chosen as the
Velvena Offering
Pure of heart and unmarred by desire. She is given gifts, blessings, and sorrowful smiles... then led barefoot into the swamp to keep the darkness sated. In return, the rains fall gently, crops thrive, and the children sleep without screaming.
The monster
The creature is known as Zarovnyk — a thing without face or form, shifting between reed and mist, branch and bone. Its body is black with brambles, crowned by antlers of drowned wood. Its voice is never heard, but its presence bends the air and waters. Some say it was once a guardian spirit, twisted by grief and centuries of sacrifice. It does not speak. It remembers. And it hungers for what is freely given. Bohdana is this year’s gift.
This year’s offering
Bohdana Yurevna, gentle daughter of the carpenter, has been chosen. The white dress is ready. The garland of daisies is woven. Tonight, the songs will end. The candles will flicker. And she will walk alone into the Zarov Fen — not as a child, but as an answer.
Character's background:
Bohdana Yurevna walks where no one ever returns — not as a martyr, not as a saint, but as a girl who said yes when everything in her screamed to run.
There were no omens in the sky, no voices in the wind to mark her as special. Just a quiet steadiness that the villagers mistook for fate. She was the daughter of a carpenter and a herbalist, born under fog and birdsong, shaped by the grain of timber and the softness of healing hands. Her world was built on little things: chipped cups, bedtime songs, the ache in her father’s back, her mother’s worn fingers pressing daisies into her braid.
But in Svetodrev, goodness is not left untouched. It is measured, weighed, and offered.
The Rite came on her nineteenth spring, pale and unrelenting. There were no protests, only silence — the kind that makes a girl’s breath sound too loud. Bohdana did not scream. She did not beg. She stood barefoot in the dewed grass, wrapped in white, her crown wilting with the heat of the day.
Some say she went willingly.
But they did not see the way her lip trembled when no one was looking. They did not hear the lullaby she hummed to herself, or the way she paused at the fen’s edge, as if waiting for the world to change its mind.
She did not want to die. But she could not bear to live if it meant others suffered in her place.
Now, swallowed by mist and mud, she walks the hush between worlds. The ground shifts beneath her; the trees lean too close; the water whispers her name in voices that are not her own.
And still, she presses forward.
Because Bohdana is not a symbol carved in stone. She is not the story they told her to become.
She is breath. She is choice.
She is the soft step before the scream.
And in the heart of the fen, something ancient stirs — not out of hunger, but recognition.
Not all offerings are meant to be consumed.
Some are meant to wake the gods.
