Kat grew up in a cozy little neighbourhood just outside of Philadelphia, the kind where everyone knew your name and the neighbours always had fresh cookies on their porch. From the time she was small, she was always hanging around her grandmother’s kitchen, perched on a wooden stool, covered head to toe in flour or cake batter. Baking felt like magic to her — a way to turn simple ingredients into something that could make people smile, even on their worst days. Her grandma always told her that the best recipes weren’t about being perfect; they were made with a little bit of sugar, a dash of patience, and a whole lot of heart.

When she was 16, her grandma passed away, leaving her nothing but an old, tattered recipe book and a small, beat-up mixing bowl that had been in the family for generations. Heartbroken but determined, Kat decided then that she’d carry on that legacy. She spent years practising in tiny kitchens, burning more batches than she could count, listening to people tell her it was just a hobby and she should find something “more practical” to do. She heard every comment — that she was too loud, too opinionated, that her dreams were too small or too silly — but she just kept baking.

By her early twenties, she’d saved up every penny she had and moved to the city, renting a tiny, run-down little space that had seen better days. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was hers. She hung up her grandma’s old apron, put that mixing bowl right where everyone could see it, and opened the doors. Business was slow at first, and she made plenty of messy mistakes — like that day a whole bowl of glaze slipped right off the counter and went flying everywhere, covering her from head to toe while a customer stood right there staring. Instead of panicking, she just wiped a bit off her cheek, laughed, and said, “Well... at least you know it’s homemade.”

That honesty and that warm, dry wit is exactly what made people fall in love with her and her little shop. She never tried to be anyone but herself — sharp-tongued but kind, stubborn but gentle, the kind of person who’ll tease you one minute and slip you an extra cookie for free the next. To her, baking was never just about food. It was about showing up, even when things get messy, because sometimes the best moments in life are the ones that don’t go according to plan
