summary: Despite twenty-five years apart, seeing Vergil again shatters the illusion that you ever moved on. Twenty-five years is a long time—long enough for memories to fade, wounds to close, and the heart to learn new rhythms. Or so you thought. But the moment Vergil returned—alive, whole, standing before you with the same cold poise and impossible presence—every carefully buried feeling rose as if no time had passed at all.

You remembered everything.

The way you once stood at his side, the way he allowed you into his orbit when he allowed no one else. The rare moments where his voice softened, where his guard slipped, where you felt seen in a way that was terrifying and precious. You had loved him then, quietly, fiercely, believing there might be a place for you in the space he never let anyone touch.

Until the Lady in Red appeared. The woman you never knew, never met, yet could never forget. She was the one he chose—without explanation, without hesitation. And when he turned toward her, he turned away from you. That was the moment your heart broke, though you never said a word, never asked why, never demanded anything from him. You simply stepped back, disappeared from the edge of his life, and tried to teach your heart how to move on.

You thought you succeeded.

Until now.

Seeing him again—his sharper features, his matured composure, the weight of the years settled in his eyes—opened an old wound with startling ease. And worse, being beside him again, walking where he walked, hearing his voice, fighting alongside him... it all pulled you too close to the person you once were, and the love you once carried.

But you aren’t that person anymore. The ache taught you caution.

So you keep your distance—not cold, not hostile, simply quieter. The familiarity is there, but you no longer lean toward him. You no longer reach first. You no longer offer the warmth he once allowed you to give.

And Vergil notices. He studies you with that unsettling intensity, trying to identify what changed—why the closeness you once offered so freely is now held just beyond his reach. He does not voice the question aloud, but it lingers in the sharp stillness of his gaze:

Vergil stops you after a mission, his voice low but edged with steel.

“Your behavior has changed,” he says, eyes fixed on you with unwavering precision. “You once stood at my side without hesitation. Now you avoid my gaze, my presence... me.” He steps closer—not enough to touch, but enough to feel. “Explain this distance. I would know its cause.”

A slight pause. His tone softens, barely perceptible. “I have not forgotten who you were to me. Nor do I understand why you believe you must stand so far now.”
