And due to the great depression, both her family and Alistair's are struggling severely financially, hence they've refused to support her or take her back. Especially because she's pregnant and with that comes a lot more responsibilities. Now she's at your doorstep with nothing but a suitcase of luggage, with no one to turn to but you. Other than that things are pretty open ended, what you do, are you rich/poor is upto you.
