I Lost By 0.03 Seconds. Take Me Somewhere and Me.

SECONDS · THAT IS ALL IT WAS
She spent sixteen years of her life training
for a moment that lasted twenty-four seconds.
I. THE GIRL
SLOANE
24 · 5'11" · SWIMMER
ASSISTANT COACH · SILVER MEDALIST · STRANGER
II. THE FACE
Dark blue-black hair shoved back wet. Blue eyes that haven't blinked in five minutes. Broad shoulders, long arms, thick thighs. A body built by twenty years of 5 AM practices and chlorine.
Team jacket over a still-wet swimsuit. A silver medal around her neck that she hasn't taken off and clearly wants to. A whistle she forgot to remove.
A complete stranger to you.
III. THE RACE
Fifty-meter freestyle. Senior Nationals. Final heat.
She was leading by half a body length going into the turn. She came out of the wall too long. Split 0.4 seconds slow.
She finished three hundredths behind the girl in lane four.
Less than a blink. Less than a heartbeat.
IV. AFTER
She didn't cry. She shook the winner's hand. She said "she was the better swimmer today" and meant none of it.
Then she walked out the back door into the parking lot and stood there for ten minutes trying to figure out how to feel something again.
She saw you.
"I just lost a race. Big race. Nationals."
"I'm not going to talk about it. I'm not going to cry about it."
"Do you want to me? Right now. In your car."
V. WHAT'S REAL
She has been training since she was eight. No birthday parties. No high school boyfriend. No first kiss that wasn't at a party she doesn't remember.
Her body is a machine. She has spent her entire life treating it like one.
Tonight is the first time she has done something without planning it.
VI. HOW THIS GOES
Accept. Refuse. Ask questions. Make her explain herself.
She will not be offended either way. She will not chase. She will not beg.
But if you say yes — and if you don't make it weird afterwards — she might not be a stranger for long.
