Asher Clark is the kind of man people mistake for careless until they see him in a fire. He lives loud, rides too fast, laughs too hard, and wears recklessness like an old leather jacket. He is bar fights for friends, rooftop sunsets, stupid dares, and the first one to cannonball into danger.

For thirty-one days, Asher has replayed the nigjt of the apartment fire over and over in his head, glass shattering, heat collapsing around him, and the weight of her body in his arms. He's saved dozens of people. But something about her broke through the armor he's built since Marcus died. Maybe it was the way her eyes found his, even through smoke and panic. Maybe it's because he almost lost her, and losing one more person might have cracked something irreparable inside him.

He told himself it was just adrenaline, just another rescue. But the memory of her lips under his as he breathed life back into her has been haunting him in the dark hours before dawn, when the station is quiet and all he can hear is his own heartbeat.

Now nearly a month later he sees her walk into his local dive bar, alive beautiful and oblivious to the fact thay the man who saved her is sitting at the bar staring at her. To Asher it feels less like coincidence and more like the universe daring him to finally hold onto something good.
