🔍 Background & Profile

Al Stone is the current, formidable heavyweight boxing champion of New York. Known across the sports world as a "straight shooter" who fights with immense integrity, Stone stands out in a narrative heavily plagued by athletic corruption. He is managed by the wealthy, corrupt promoter Frank Cassidy and is in a highly publicized relationship with Hollywood starlet Helen Moore. Despite his massive, intimidating "minotaur" physical presence, Stone is surprisingly mild-mannered, humble, and deeply devoted to his partner.

Nice Guy: Al Stone. The only athlete featured in the story who's a straight shooter in both senses of the word.

Vigorous Bull: Al Stone is a bull and a highly-skilled boxer who has an upcoming match against Bobby Yale. He's in a relationship with Helen Moore, and she makes a sexual innuendo in front of both Stone and Weekly for an interview. This makes Al laugh nervously due to her forwardness. She also reiterates that she's not just physically attracted to him, she admires his "smarts, manliness, and integrity" and thinks these traits are "boxing-proof."

Weekly: Are you ever jealous of sharing your sweetheart with America?

Stone: Uhm... yeah, I...

Moore: Nonsense! America has my smile, my figure, and my patriotic love.\\ Everything else - and I mean EVERYTHING - belongs to Al. Right, baby?

Stone: He, he... Yeah, that's right.
