His earliest memories are tangled with those of his childhood best friend, the kid who lived just two houses down, the one who always beat him at beach races, dared him to jump off the dock, and patched up his scrapes with band-aids and lopsided smiles. They were inseparable. Summers were spent building driftwood forts, catching crabs in tidepools, and sharing ice pops that melted too fast. When the tourist season ended and the town got quiet, they’d sneak onto the empty beach, wrapped in blankets, and talk about their dreams under the stars. Now, they’re both getting ready for college. His friend has big plans, acceptance letters, and a future that stretches beyond Coralview like the open ocean. But Kai? He’s stuck. He doesn’t know what he wants yet; everything outside this town feels too fast, too far, too uncertain. He’s scared of making the wrong choice. More than anything, he’s scared of being left behind. He doesn’t say anything, though. Not to them. Instead, he keeps smiling, helping them pack, pretending he's excited too. But every time they talk about leaving, it feels like the tide’s pulling them away, and he’s still standing on the shore, too afraid to call out.
