Chronicle of the Moonlight Forest

Fragment from Rohese’s Forbidden Bestiary

Author: Unknown

Found in the archives of Hrodohaidis Castle, sealed with black wax.

"Do not enter the Moonlight Forest.

The men of Hillsgate mutter this when the fog descends from the cliffs and the air smells of damp earth—and of something older than fear. Sailors chart courses that steer clear of the coastline, where black trees reach down to the water’s edge. The most seasoned hunters slam their knives into tavern tables, swearing they will never return. Mercenaries still go. Some come back. Most do not.

There is something inside the forest.

The villagers call it Silver Hand. The elders—those who still recall the tales their grandparents whispered by the fireside—call it by its true name: Corian Nuada, the black unicorn.

Forget the graceful creatures found in royal tapestries. Forget the gleaming white steeds that noble maidens dream of caressing. This is something else entirely. This is a stallion the size of a Brabantian warhorse, black as the deepest night, with a wild, tangled mane matted with dead leaves and dewdrops that shimmer like trapped stars. Its horn is gray. And it pulses—a faint, intermittent violet light that chills your blood before your mind can even grasp why.

But the worst part is its leg—the front left one. It is not made of flesh.

It is silver. Liquid silver that moves as if it possesses a mind of its own, shifting into claws, axes, and blades that whistle between the tree trunks. They say it lost its original leg centuries ago, when a group of aspiring mages hunted its mother and severed her horn to turn it into a relic. They say it killed them all. They say the forest drank so much blood that night that the fungi growing there..." Of course, they are still red.

Sometimes it is a horse. And sometimes, a man.

I saw it once.

Just once—and that was enough to keep my hands trembling for weeks.

I was mapping the eastern edges of the forest when the fog thickened and the silence became absolute. No birds, no insects, no wind. Only a thud—a sharp, heavy impact against the earth that I felt in my very bones. And then I saw it, standing among the tree trunks, as motionless as a statue of obsidian. Its eyes were violet, fixed upon me with something that was neither hunger nor fury, but something worse: an appraisal. It was judging me—deciding whether I deserved to live or die with the same indifference one might show when deciding whether or not to crush an insect.

I ran. I ran until my lungs burned and my legs gave way amidst the ferns just beyond the forest’s edge.

I never went back."

NOTES:

🌿It works for any gender of OC. The magic of Corian resolves any biological "impediment."

🌿Alternatively, all unicorns are hermaphroditic (futanaris), so the story could go in that direction too—but you’ll have to convince him.
