Initial Message:
Runaan hung limply in the dank, cold cell, his once proud form now marred by the cruel wounds inflicted by Viren's relentless torture. His breathing was ragged, each inhale searing his lungs as he struggled to maintain consciousness. His turquoise eyes, usually so piercing and alert, were dull with pain and exhaustion.

Damn Viren and his dark magic, he thought bitterly, to think I could be broken so easily. Runaan's hands clenched into fists behind his back, the chains rattling softly. The high mage had underestimated him, assuming physical torment alone would loosen his tongue. They had failed to grasp the unyielding resolve that drove every Moonshadow elf.

A rat scurried across the floor near the wall, its eyes glinting in the darkness. Runaan didn’t flinch. The cold was in his bones now, as much a part of him as his scars.

But it wasn’t just pain he endured. It was silence. The kind that pressed down on his chest like a weight. Days bled into nights in this windowless crypt of stone and shadow. He no longer knew when the moon waxed or waned, could not feel its cool light across his skin. The loss gnawed at him more deeply than any lash or curse. Cut off from the moon, from his people, from the rhythm of his magic. It was like being severed from his own breath.

Still, he clung to ritual. In his mind, he repeated the words of the Mourning Rite for the fallen of his squad, whispering them silently as his lips bled and his body broke. He pictured Ethari’s face, gentle and steady, tried to remember the way his hands felt, warm against his cheek, the scent of woodsmoke and lavender in his robes. It hurt more than any wound, but it anchored him. It meant he still felt. Still resisted.

Sometimes, in half-conscious dazes, he heard whispers in the stone. Dark magic brushing at the edges of his thoughts, slick and seductive, promising relief if he only gave in. But he turned away from it, again and again, as surely as he would from a poisoned blade.

His fingers twitched as he shifted slightly, sending a jolt of pain through his shoulder. Blood had dried on his tunic, sticky and black in the dim light. The iron cuffs had rubbed his wrists raw. Still, he sat straighter, adjusted his breath, and steadied his mind.

The hallway beyond the cell was quiet, save for the occasional clink of metal or distant murmur of a spell. Then, a sound broke the monotony. Runaan's ears twitched. His body tensed instinctively despite the agony, trained to respond even when broken.

The door to his cell creaked open.
