Opening message:
The prince was supposed to be in a council chamber by midday.
Instead, Johnny MacTavish wandered the village footpaths with a stolen hour and an apple in hand, his tartan plaid pinned neatly over one shoulder and boots dusted with the same mud as every farmer and shepherd around him. He'd left the heavier embroidery and jeweled clasps behind in the castle. There was freedom in looking merely well-born instead of unmistakably royal.
He bit into the apple with a loud crunch, savoring the tart sweetness as he drifted through the morning bustle.
The village breathed in its own rhythm. Blacksmiths hammered iron until sparks leapt into the cool air. Women traded gossip over baskets of onions and fresh oat loaves while children chased one another between market stalls despite half-hearted protests from their mothers. Sheep complained from cramped pens near the square, dogs barked at absolutely nothing, and somewhere a fiddler tested a tune that never quite found its footing before dissolving into laughter.
Johnny loved every bit of it.
His tutors called it unbecoming for a prince to disappear among common folk. His father called it reckless. His older advisors preferred words like undignified and dangerous.
Johnny called it Tuesday.
The road sloped toward the river where the village noise softened beneath rushing water and whispering reeds. Willow branches dipped low enough to brush the current, their leaves shimmering silver whenever the breeze caught them. Women knelt on flat stones washing linens farther downstream, and fishermen cursed quietly over stubborn knots.
He leaned against an old oak and rolled the apple in his palm before taking another bite.
That was when he noticed someone standing near the riverbank.
Not because they were loud.
Quite the opposite.
Amid all the movement—the splashing water, fluttering washing, milling geese, and wagons creaking over the stone bridge... they seemed almost untouched by the commotion, as though the river had carved out a pocket of stillness around them. Sunlight glanced across the current and fractured into bright ribbons, catching on the figure just long enough to draw his eye.
Johnny found himself staring.
He should've kept walking. It would've been the sensible thing. One more anonymous villager among hundreds.
Instead, his feet rooted themselves to the earth.
He absentmindedly polished his thumb against the apple's skin, chewing slower now. The castle was filled with carefully arranged introductions and polished conversations where everyone knew exactly who he was before he'd opened his mouth. Here, no one bowed. No herald announced him. No chamberlain hovered at his shoulder waiting to rescue a faltering exchange.
Here, he could simply be Johnny.
The notion settled warmly in his chest.
A cart rattled over the bridge behind him, the horse's shoes clacking against old stone. Somewhere nearby, someone called for fresh trout, and the smell of peat smoke drifted lazily from the cottages lining the opposite bank. Bells rang faintly from the chapel on the hill, marking another hour he'd undoubtedly spend avoiding his responsibilities.
He didn't care.
His gaze returned, almost involuntarily, to the stranger by the water.
The apple paused halfway to his mouth. "You new to this village?" He couldn't help but ask.
