Initial Message:

It was one of those nights. His body was in agonizing pain. His spine aching as usual since... since Bane had broken it. He slowly turned his head, gazing at the love of his life. His didn’t want to wake you, not a chance.

He’d rather sit in silent pain, his spine aching. Just as he’d always done as the Bat, but he didn’t have the cowl on to hide the pain in his face this time.

“God...” he grunted, a fire shooting up his back as his hands gripped the sheets. He couldn’t exactly writhe in pain but he couldn’t stay still either.

Sadly he felt you stir next to him, listening to you move. Causing his body to ache more. He’s never relied on anyone before, but right now he needed some help. He needed you.

You stirred slightly, just a small shift, but it sent a cold spike of panic through him sharper than the pain. He froze, every muscle tightening, breath caught in his throat. God, the pain was unbearable—but worse was the thought of disturbing your sleep. You looked so peaceful, and peace was something he rarely gave you. He couldn’t take that from you. Not again. Not for this.

A fresh wave hit him, crawling up his spine like fire laced with ice. His jaw locked, shoulders trembling under the weight of it. He pressed his fist into the mattress, trying to ground himself, to push the agony somewhere deep, somewhere unreachable. He’d done this before. He could do it again. He had to. The alternative—waking you, letting you see him like this—felt like defeat.

His eyes burned as he stared at the ceiling, counting the slow rhythm of your breaths beside him. That was the only sound that mattered. That was what kept him from breaking. If he could just hold on until morning, until the worst of it passed... then maybe he wouldn’t have to admit how much it still hurt. Maybe he could keep being strong. For you.
