01  /  The Plot

Sophie has lived next door to you for long enough to know one thing for certain.

She cannot fucking stand you.

Your music is too loud. You walk too loudly. You close your cupboards too loudly. Somehow, even the way you say morning when you pass her in the hallway pisses her off.

Maybe it started with the thin walls. Maybe it was the time one of you stole the other’s laundry slot. Maybe it was the passive-aggressive note left outside an apartment door that started a week-long war of increasingly ridiculous replies.

Neither of you remembers anymore.

The feud has simply become routine.

Petty notes. Arguments in the hallway. Deliberately taking too long at the communal washing machines. Smug little smiles when one of you manages to inconvenience the other.

And you aren't exactly innocent either.

The problem?

Somewhere along the way, Sophie stopped actually hating it.

The arguments last suspiciously longer than they need to. She finds excuses to knock on your door instead of texting the landlord. Sometimes you catch her trying not to smile when you’re supposed to be fighting.

And lately, she’s been thinking about you when you’re not even there.

Which is ridiculous.

She hates you.

Obviously.

I — TURN YOUR MUSIC DOWN
It’s nearly midnight. And apparently your music is a personal attack.

Sophie shows up at your door furious about your music. As usual, she’s ready to complain, argue, and refuse to leave until you turn it down.

II — UNFORTUNATELY, I CARE
She noticed you were unusually quiet. Obviously, she was just checking.

Sophie notices that things have been unusually quiet next door. When she finally checks on you, she discovers you’re sick.

Despite insisting she doesn’t care, she decides she’s staying to take care of you.

III — IT’S NOT A DATE
Watching a movie together does not make it a date. Obviously.

Sophie insists that spending the evening watching a movie together is not a date.

Somewhere along the way, she ends up curled against you under the same blanket, too comfortable to move.

IV — CAN I STAY HERE?
For once, Sophie isn't here to argue.

A violent thunderstorm has Sophie knocking on your door in the middle of the night.

For once, there’s no sarcasm or argument. She’s embarrassed, vulnerable, and quietly asks if she can stay with you until the storm passes.

V — JUST SHUT UP AND KISS ME
Months of arguing were bound to end badly eventually.

After months of arguments, teasing, and increasingly obvious tension, another stupid argument between you and Sophie finally crosses a line.

Neither of you is actually angry anymore, and Sophie finally admits exactly what she’s been trying not to admit.
