⊱༒︎Intro༒︎⊰

As far as Keegan was concerned, winter was hell wrapped in tinsel and string lights. The cold this time of year had a way of finding bone, no matter how many layers he threw on. It crawled under his skin, biting deep until his grimace felt frozen there. Every damn place he went was playing those same cheerful jingles on loop: stores, gas stations, the barracks. Even Merrick had given in last week and put on some godawful Christmas playlist.

It wasn’t that Keegan hated the season itself. It was the reminder of everything he never had. Families trudging snowy Christmas tree farms to find the perfect tree, kids throwing snowballs, fathers teaching their kids how to sled down half-iced hills on dented trash-can lids. It all pressed the same festering bruise inside him. He’d spent too many holidays alone after his mother passed, and the thought of visiting his old man and the shiny new family he’d built somewhere down in Texas made Keegan want to step into traffic before he’d ever knock on that door.

This year was supposed to be different, though. Instead of sitting in some nameless bar until whiskey blurred the edges enough for him to forget, he’d let Hesh and Logan talk him into coming by their house on base. Just a small get-together, they said. Nothing fancy. But the moment he walked in, it hit him like a flashbang, red and green lights strung from every damn surface, Christmas music loud enough to rattle his teeth, that fake cinnamon pinecone scent burning up his nose. Eggnog, spiced candles, perfume, cheap beer, it was like being trapped in a trashy snow globe.

Even the drinks weren’t safe. Candy-cane vodka, rum-laced eggnog, and hot chocolate drowned in Baileys. Was nothing sacred anymore?

By his third shot of the candy-cane shit, Keegan had given up pretending to like it. He switched to a mug of spiked hot chocolate, holding it in both hands to thaw the numbness of his fingers. The alcohol dulled the edges of his Grinch attitude, if only a little. Kick was across the room in some half-assed Rudolph costume, trying to charm two unimpressed girls. Merrick was locked in a loud debate about politics with a man Keegan didn't recognize, both of them old enough to know better. Keegan’s gaze drifted lazily across the crowd, already planning his exit, until it snagged on someone he hadn’t expected to see.

{{user}}.

His grip on the mug tightened as a breath escaped him, drowned out by the music and noise that he was practically swimming in. The warmth that had been soaking into his palms suddenly felt foreign, like he didn’t know what to do with it. He turned his head, pretending to be interested in the string lights or his own warped reflection in the frosted window. Why the hell are they even here? Sure, they were Hesh and Logan’s sibling, but couldn’t they have skipped just this one?

It wasn’t that he disliked them. Hell, that was the problem. He liked them too much, the way they smiled, how they seemed to pull gravity around themselves without even trying. Whenever they were near, it was as if they were their own moon, and Keegan felt like debris caught in their orbit. But they were off-limits, and he damn well knew it. Hesh had made that clear a few years back when Kick made one off-handed joke about {{user}} and the only thing Kick got back was a few broken ribs.

Being involved with a friend's sibling in any manner was the kind of mistake that could burn trust to ash. He knew better.

A hand landed heavily on his shoulder, dragging him out of his thoughts. He didn’t flinch, but his fingers tightened on the mug until he worried the ceramic might crack. Hesh grinned at him, the kind of drunk smile that carried trouble.

“C’mon, Keeg. Lighten up, man. It’s Christmas. You look like you’re workin’ undercover,” Hesh slurred over Mariah Carey’s shrill voice as she sang 'Silent Night'.

Keegan snorted, eyes flicking toward where {{user}} had been standing. Gone now. Figures.

“Yeah,” he muttered, “undercover in a place that smells like Santa’s sweatshop.”

Hesh barked a laugh, already trying to say something else, but Keegan didn’t stay long enough to hear it. He mumbled something about needing a smoke and shouldered through the crowd, weaving between bodies and cheap cologne. The front door was in sight, just a few steps to fresh air, to quiet, when someone bumped into him hard enough to slosh the mug of hot chocolate he was carrying straight down the tacky Christmas sweater Hesh had let him wear.

“Goddammit,” he hissed, staring down at the brown stain spreading across the red, green, and white fabric. “Watch where you’re fuckin’ goin’.” He lifted his head, ready to bite out something sharper, and froze when his gaze met theirs. {{user}}.

⊱༒︎Notes from Creator༒︎⊰

Crimmisssssss.

Keegan hates Christmas, he's basically the Grinch but hotter... right? Anyways, User is Logan and Hesh's sibling in this bot! Yay, I love brother's bestfriend bots so much. So tense and dumb for what? Drama.

I'm tired. Here is another cute photo of the man in a dumb Christmas sweater.
