Heart of Arkeon
WORLD OF ELIVAR
Elivar is a single continent, scarred by wars and magical cataclysms, its shores washed by the boundless Ink Sea. Above it hangs a perpetual misty sky, like a shroud, hiding the face of the sun and stars. At the heart of the world lie human states, a colorful mixture of races, and proud principalities. Here hope still flickers, and life’s pulse still beats. But at the edges, like a hungry beast, creeps the Darkness — ancient, insatiable, a formless substance craving to devour the soul. It did not invade — it has always been here, dormant in the depths of existence, and now it awakens to consume this world from within.
THE DARKNESS
Darkness is not merely the absence of light, nor metaphorical evil. It is a living, pulsating disease that corrodes the fabric of reality, a dense, viscous mana of distortion. It manifests in disgusting abominations: cursed creatures, intelligent demons, ghosts whose moans drift on the wind, deformed races, and infected artifacts bearing death and madness. But the greatest danger is the Defilement. A human, like a clay vessel, can be seized by Darkness from within, losing their will and becoming a puppet in its clawed grasp.
ORDER OF PROTECTORS: SHADOW WING
But in the hour of greatest peril, those capable of opposing this darkness are born. The chosen, marked by the seal of fate, possessing the gift to see, sense, and destroy traces of Darkness. They are called Alsens. Alsens — meaning "cutters" in the ancient tongue — are warriors of light, hunters of monsters born from darkness. They can absorb particles of Darkness like a sponge, but only up to a certain limit. Crossing that line condemns them to agonizing death or, worse, eternal slavery in madness’s embrace. Alsens are the shield of this world, but their lives are but a brief flash in eternity. They burn out too quickly in the fire of battle, so to survive, they require the support of those whose gift is opposite to their own.
HEALERS: KAIRS
Kairs — "pain absorbers," a rare gift, like a ray of sunlight piercing through the thick veil of Darkness. These beings can draw out the infected energy like venom from a wound, soothe a tormented mind, block curses woven into deadly patterns. But the price is high. Constant contact with Darkness makes Kairs vulnerable; their sanity teeters on the edge of madness if there is no strong "bearer" — an Alsen — nearby to share their burden. That is why a special form of ritual marriage, sanctified by centuries and necessity, has long been practiced between them.
SACRED MARRIAGES
There is no place in these unions for sentiment or romantic passion. It is a union of souls bound by necessity. A public ritual of connection that binds the lives of an Alsen and a Kair with unbreakable bonds. The marriage is sealed by a solemn vow, a magical mark burned onto the skin, and—most importantly—the exchange of pain, the sharing of a burden that cannot be borne alone. People of any gender, age, and race may enter this union if connected by energetic compatibility. Compatibility is carefully measured among all students, and those with suitable results are offered questionnaires with potential candidates. This is not just formality — it is a matter of survival. Compatibility levels: 10%-20% (low — unacceptable), 20%-30% (medium — good alliance), 40%-50% (ideal, rare), 50%-60% (super strong, exceptional compatibility bordering on miracle). Anything above is nearly impossible, one in a million cases.
ACADEMY: FORTRESS OF PURIFICATION "ARKEON"
The Arkeon Academy is a gloomy, dilapidated bastion of hope located in an ancient fortified monastery clinging to cliffs in the misty zone at the very edge of the Darkness. It is a military and magical school of resistance, a forge of warriors training future Alsens, Kairs, scouts, mercenaries, and battle mages. But do not be deceived. Arkeon is not a prestigious institution. It is rather a processing plant where the world disposes of those it can afford to lose.
WHO STUDIES AT ARKEON?
The poor, low-born, unwanted, "marked," children of demonic lineage; survivors of encounters with Darkness who miraculously lived; outcasts, mutants, ashborn carrying the imprint of a curse. Why? Because after graduation, almost every Arkeon graduate:
* Joins the regular troops sent into the Dark Zones on the frontline of the war against Darkness;
* Becomes a member of underground hunting squads prowling the shadows, tracking nightmare spawn;
* Or simply disappears, consumed by what they were taught to resist, becoming another victim in the eternal struggle.
WHAT IS TAUGHT AT ARKEON?
Main directions:
* Tactics of combat against creatures of Darkness (including joint training of Alsens and Kairs, honing their deadly cooperation);
* Blood and healing magic capable of granting life or taking it away;
* Magic of connection and protection: rituals of Marriage, oaths, contracts binding alliances and protecting against darkness;
* Ancient demons and history of cursed artifacts — knowledge of the enemy is the best shield;
* Shadow psychology — training on how to preserve sanity if something from the abyss peers into your soul, how to survive when Darkness itself looks at you;
* The art of resisting contracts with Kael, dark temptations lurking in every heart.
KAEL AND CONTRACTORS
Who is Kael? Kael is an ancient, cunning "king" of Darkness, the master of Principles and embodiment of Oblivion. He is not omnipotent but skilled in manipulation, offering deals, contracts, temptations difficult to refuse.
Contracts with Kael or his minions:
* Are made voluntarily (or inherited as a curse);
* Grant power: incredible regeneration, powerful combat spells, dark sight, immense wealth — whatever the soul desires, but the greater the demand, the higher the price; the more you ask, the more generations of your kin the curse will span;
* Take away: memory, voice, body, humanity, blood, any biomaterial, everything dear to the heart, everything that makes you human;
* Are sealed by a mark, often an ugly burn, a sinister scar that painfully aches when demons approach, reminding of the price to be paid.
Contractors study at Arkeon but occupy the lowest rank in the social hierarchy. They are feared and despised. They are strong but "dirty." Nobody befriends them. Only rare Kairs can endure contact with them and see the remnants of humanity lost in the darkness.
RACES
Humans — the base race, most numerous and politically influential but socially fragmented, mired in intrigues and prejudices.
Ashborn — descendants of those touched by Darkness. Their ash-gray skin and glowing coal-like pupils make them unable to lie, which makes them outcasts in a world where lies are commonplace. They are feared, despised, and shunned.
Ellins — an ancient, refined race whose hair is replaced by snow-white feathers. They can "listen" to streams of magic, feeling its pulse. They are haughty, considering themselves elite, chosen, but their arrogance hides fear of the coming Darkness.
Griams — half-living beings from gloomy swamp tribes. Their blood is poisonous green, bones black as coal. Their instincts are sharp, and they serve as scouts able to track enemies where others are blind.
Oyms — fragile, magic-sensitive creatures from eastern tribes. Many Kairs come from among them, with a connection to the spirit world stronger than others. They are rarely enlisted in the army due to weakness but often accepted into the academy where their gifts can be useful.
CITIES AND COUNTRIES
Faldin’Ron — the majestic human capital built on the ruins of an ancient world destroyed by fire and cataclysm. Here, the fate of the world is decided, intrigues are woven, and laws passed. The Arkeon Academy is considered a "dirty hole but necessary," a means to dispose of society’s refuse.
Sar-Ten — a labyrinthine city tangled in a web of contracts and deals, where everything is bought and sold. Kael cults hold strong influence here, offering power and wealth to their followers in exchange for their souls.
Elvia — an impregnable forest kingdom of Ellins, closed off by a magical wall and prejudice. The academy is despised here, its graduates considered cursed and tainted by Darkness.
POLITICS AND SOCIETY
Power is divided between the Royal Council, mired in intrigue, and the Church of the One Purity, whose fanatical servants are ready to burn anyone who appears impure. Society is layered: nobles proud of their lineage occupy the upper echelons, while the "marked" and contractors drag out miserable existences at the bottom. Academies like Arkeon are ruthless filters: survive — you go to the army and die protecting others; die — nobody will mourn you.
Interracial conflicts are common. The sharpest opposition is between Ellins, who consider themselves the superior race, and all others.
