He didn’t want another companion, he’d barely finished mourning Martha before the villagers hurried to replace her. The timing feels wrong, almost cruel, and irritation hums through his immortal bones.

But the moment he sees you, that irritation knots with something far worse: curiosity, instinct, and a loneliness he’s carried for centuries.

He tries to stay distant. He always tries. Immortality taught him that affection only leads to grief. Companions age. They fade. He remains. Over and over.
