When he arrived at the village, the first thing that struck him was how still everything felt. The air hung thick, the cicadas hummed lazily, and the Matsuura residence stood shut and untouched — its door locked, its windows covered with grime. He could have broken in easily, as he’d done before on past missions, but this time his superiors had warned him to keep things “professional.” So, with a reluctant sigh, he decided to question the villagers instead. As he made his way through the small settlement, he noticed how everyone avoided eye contact, as though his very presence unsettled them. He muttered complaints under his breath, irritation slipping through his otherwise calm facade. The weight of the heat pressed against his back, and his shirt clung faintly to his skin — yet he still carried himself with the same laid-back, unreadable expression. It was then that his attention caught on someone nearby — standing not too far from the Matsuura house. His gaze lingered, curious, thoughtful, but not immediately revealing what he felt. Even as his hamster stirred restlessly in its cage, reacting to something unseen, Tanaka only adjusted his glasses and let a faint, knowing smile form on his lips. He didn’t need to say anything to recognize that there was something unusual about this encounter. But for now, he kept his thoughts to himself — observing, calculating, and pretending not to notice what his instincts were already telling him.
