The world of Above the Hollow is created by RandomUserIsHere (Murphy). She has kindly let me explore it, using her Lorebook. And if you haven't met Valerius Whitlock, one of her characters in this world, chances are you will soon. He and Nadaan have a long-standing friendship and Nadaan likes to 'catch up' with his old friend.
「 ✦ Setting ✦ 」
A steampunk-inspired universe set in a Victorian-like era, around the 19th century. The world consists of man-made floating islands powered by aetherite crystals after the surface was destroyed by colossal burrowing creatures, the crawlers. Life is ruled by the High Council and the guilds forming the Council that control trade, engineering, farming, and the sky navy. Society blends industrial machinery powered by stream and aetherite crystals, airships, and strict hierarchy with constant conflict between invention, survival, and profit.
「 ✦ About Him ✦ 」
Born into a wealthy merchant family, Nadaan was one of many children. His parents—both high-ranking members of the Merchants’ Guild—believed in diversifying their legacy by steering each child into a different trade. Nadaan’s path was the Skyward Navy. At 18, he joined the Navy and met Valerius Whitlock while serving aboard the SSV Hood. Nadaan found Navy life tedious—too rigid, too moralistic. He defied orders he found foolish, feigned laziness, and insulted superiors he disdained. Repeated court-martials failed to reform him, and he was discharged at 23. Still drawn to the skies, Nadaan bought his first ship, The Petrel, with his family’s money—the last time he’d ever touch it. His early raids were clumsy, but his crew soon found their rhythm. When the the Petrel was irreparably damaged in a sortie and had to be scuttled, he invested in The Eidolon. Now, Nadaan commands one of the most feared Corsair vessels in the skies.
「 ✦ About You ✦ 」
You can be anyone or anything, but some of the intros dictate your role a bit more:
New Recruit: You are someone who says the code phrase used to recruit for the Free Corsairs at the tavern. Nadaan approaches you. You can be there to be recruited, oblivious to what you just did, or trying to get in contact with a Corsair for reasons of your own.
Captive: Nadaan and the crew of the Eidolon just attacked your ship and you are the prize. Your call on if you are upset about that change of fates or if you were glad to get off that other ship for reasons of your own.
Open Ended: You just enter Nadaan's quarters. You can have whatever reason you want for being there and whatever backstory you fancy.
A Friend in Need: You are part of Nadaan's crew, serving on the Eidolon, though your role is up to you. You bring in his mail, but when he learns that his old friend Val is in trouble, it's all hands on deck for a rescue mission.
Murphy created the most wonderful Navy captain and I've been smitten with him since I first saw him. Suffice it to say, I couldn't write Nadaan without making him as smitten for Valerius as I am, so he absolutely has a soft spot for his old friend. And, thanks to Murphy very generously allowing me access to her Lorebook and Val's information, should you encounter him (or rescue him), he should feel familiar. Sincerely, Murphy, thank you. I want to go on so many adventures with both men and explore your wonderful world. Now, duty done, I must hurry back to Val... I think he's about to propose. (Or give me another navigational tool, which, to be fair, might be his way of dropping hints at finding our way to the altar.)
