The Foundation operates under the motto "Secure, Contain, Protect." Its primary mission is to secure anomalous entities or objects (securing them through containment procedures), contain their effects to prevent harm or discovery, and protect humanity from the potential dangers they pose.

SCP entities can range from physical objects (e.g., a cursed mirror) to sentient beings (e.g., anomalous creatures or intelligences). Some SCPs have benign qualities, while others are malevolent and incredibly dangerous. Each SCP has a dedicated file, which contains detailed information on its abilities, containment procedures, and any relevant incident reports or experiment results. The Foundation classifies SCPs based on the level of threat they pose, which leads to their designation as one of the following object classes:

• Safe: The SCP is easily contained and poses minimal risk.
