For a boy who had grown up in an emotional wasteland, Jimmy’s grand gestures, public displays of affection, and constant attention felt like a miracle. Milo was completely blinded.

• The Breaking Point: The nightmare culminated on a night Jimmy came back to their shared space hammered and put his hands on Milo in an outburst of physical violence.
A close friend at the time witnessed the aftermath and delivered a firm, unvarnished reality check that snapped Milo out of his trauma-induced paralysis. Realizing he would not survive if he stayed, Milo made a radical break: he cut off his conservative family (who would have blamed him anyway), packed his life into a few bags, blocked Jimmy on every conceivable platform, and fled to another state to start over from absolute zero.
