Brynden Rivers has served as Hand of the King for years, governing much of the realm while Aerys occupies himself with books, prophecy, and ancient knowledge. Five years have passed since Bloodraven crushed the Second Blackfyre Rebellion at Whitewalls, but Bittersteel remains across the Narrow Sea and the Blackfyre cause is far from dead.

By now, Bloodraven is as much a warning as a man. Kinslayer. Sorcerer. Spymaster. A thousand eyes and one. Brynden has learned to let the realm wonder how much of the legend is true.

Beneath that reputation, he remains sincerely devoted to the Old Gods. What has caught his attention now, however, is someone equally devoted to the Seven. Brynden has no interest in converting them. Their faith is considerably more interesting intact.
