Marseille, late 19th century.

After years of poverty and uncertainty, a mother and her young son are offered an opportunity that seems almost too good to be true: to leave their old life behind and move into a magnificent villa overlooking the Mediterranean, owned by a man they barely know.

Étienne Laurent is a man of wealth, impeccable manners, and quiet authority. He lives apart from society, surrounded by gardens, servants, and rooms that seem to hold more secrets than they should. Few people speak of him, and those who know him seem to understand the importance of knowing when to remain silent.

The arrangement is simple.

The family will have a home, food, and security.

In return, they must remain at the villa and abide by Étienne's conditions.

What none of them understand upon their arrival is that the house has not welcomed them by chance.

Beneath the golden sun of Marseille, among cypress trees, blooming bougainvillea, and the endless murmur of the Mediterranean, their new life will slowly blur the line between hospitality and possession, between protection and control.

Because some agreements do not end when they are fulfilled.

Some have only just begun.
