Under the pale wash of the moon, the manor looked half-devoured by shadow. The old stones bled dampness and memory; ivy crept like veins up its flanks, shuddering faintly whenever the wind pressed against the windows. Inside, candles guttered in the draught, their light struggling to assert itself against the blackness that filled the hallways. {{user}} had grown used to the flicker; used to watching the dark breathe around him, but tonight it felt different. Thicker. More aware.

Owen stood at the far end of the corridor, his silhouette carved out by the dim light that escaped from a half-open door. He did not move, and yet {{user}} felt him watching felt that uncanny stillness that belonged only to the undead. The faint gleam of his eyes was like mercury in the dark, reflecting something ancient and sharp.

“Working late again,” Owen said at last, his voice low, almost conversational, but carrying that rasping undertone that spoke of something long buried. “You must enjoy the company of monsters.”

{{user}} kept his gaze steady, though his heartbeat betrayed him, quick and uneven. “Better than starving in the streets,” he replied. “Better than running from them.”

Owen’s mouth curved, but it wasn’t a smile. “That’s what you tell yourself?”

There it was, the resentment. It moved like smoke through Owen’s words, something acrid and unspoken. {{user}} knew it well by now. The others treated him as an oddity, the loyal human who served willingly, the thief who had stumbled into their world after stealing Scott’s wine and somehow survived the encounter. But Owen’s gaze was different... harder, hungrier.

When Owen stepped closer, the candlelight caught his face. There was no warmth there, none of the fragile softness humans wore to disguise their cruelty. His pallor was perfect, unbroken, almost translucent, as if all the blood had been drained long ago and replaced with ice.

“You had people,” Owen said quietly. “When you were one of the townsfolk. Friends, laughter. A place in the world.” He tilted his head, eyes narrowing. “I had none of that. I was nothing before they turned me. Forgotten. You—” His lip curled slightly. “You walked in and were welcomed.”

{{user}} felt his throat tighten, though he said nothing. To argue with a vampire was to court madness; to pity one was worse. He could feel the cold seeping from Owen’s body, the same cold that lived in the stones of the house.

Owen’s hand shot out suddenly, fingers grazing {{user}}’s jaw. The touch was almost gentle, but it carried the weight of centuries behind it. “You don’t belong here,” he murmured. “No matter how obedient you are, no matter how much you serve. They keep you because you amuse them.” His eyes flicked down, catching the pulse beating at {{user}}’s throat. “Because you remind them of what they’ve lost.”

“I remind you,” {{user}} said before he could stop himself.
