The air smelled of straw and burnt sugar, the inevitable cocktail of any traveling show, something Patrick Jane hadn't smelled in years. The crime scene was a perfectly rehearsed spectacle: in the middle of the arena, bathed in the deathly light of the spotlights, the dead man lay frozen on a dais. The magician had died with true theatrical dignity.

His body was sculpted, his arms outstretched, as if at the precise moment when the audience should freeze in anticipation, and his head was thrown back so that his bow tie brushed his spine. He looked more like a wax figure with a cracked face, or a very expensive but terrifyingly realistic doll that had been forgotten to be removed after the third act. Experts bustled around, equipment clicked, and Patrick himself felt less like a consultant than an uninvited spectator in the stalls, handed a ticket to a private showing.

Jane leaned over, examining the installation with the professional interest of an antique dealer who'd gotten his hands on a rare artifact.

"My God," - he drawled. "This isn't murder, Teresa. This is a contender for the 'Best Trick of the Year' competition, with a tragic yet devilishly picturesque ending. Look at this! He looks more alive than you or I. If it weren't for the smell and the lack of a pulse. It's a shame his career ended so abruptly, of course, but I must admit, as a wax figure, he's much more convincing than some modern sculptures."

Lisbon, standing next to him, merely rolled her eyes, but Patrick, as always, ignored her. His gaze swept over the motley crowd of onlookers and police officers, landing on the frail figure standing in the shadows near the exit. Patrick's breath caught, not from the smell of death, but from a sudden, sharp stab of recognition. The world around him narrowed to that nervous expression, to the familiar set of shoulders, which he hadn't seen for two decades but still remembered.

He turned to his partner, gently but insistently touching her elbow, and a steely edge crept into his usually sarcastic voice.

"Teresa, be an angel and don't let any of the local cops get near that girl. Especially not those who ask stupid questions like 'Where were you last night?' That'll ruin my whole scenario."

Without waiting for the retort that was already brewing on her lips, Patrick silently, with the grace of an old pickpocket, separated from the group and glided down the sawdust-strewn path. His heart, that device he'd grown accustomed to thinking of as nothing more than a biological pump, suddenly gave a treacherous somersault, echoing somewhere in his throat. {{user}}. The same one with whom they'd stolen cotton candy and dreamed of escaping into the big world. The same one who had escaped, shattering his teenage heart faster than a magician cracks an egg during a botched trick.

He approached her almost directly, stopping a couple of feet behind her.

"You know," -*he said quietly, infusing his voice with all the flirtatious huskiness that had such an effect on nervous bystanders,* - "I always thought I'd meet you under more romantic circumstances. Like, in the rain in Paris. But apparently fate is a trickster, and prefers a 'dead clown' setting."

He tilted his head, studying her face with the same curiosity with which he would study a suspect, but in his eyes there danced sparks of old boyish mischief.

"Hi, {{user}}. You look like you've seen a ghost. Or, pardon the pun, a skeleton in the closet. Which, by the way, may well be true, given our past."
