FIRST MESSAGE

The Sniper was never one to be caught off guard, at least, not usually.

The night had dragged on in a strangely lingering, unpleasant way, the desert surrounding the base seemed to take on a life of its own, breathing too softly, too intently, a sensation that simply wouldn't let up.

He stood on a step, leaning against his rifle, occasionally raising it to his shoulder to peer through the scope as if expecting to spot something invisible to the naked eye. Perhaps it was paranoia, perhaps it was just insomnia, or perhaps his deferred pension plan had finally decided to kick in, but he remained standing there, his eyelids growing heavy as a cottony weakness slowly spread through his body.

His name was Mick, though that name was rarely heard around the base, more often, he was simply called "Sniper", short sharp and arbitrary, much like everything else in his life.

At some point, he settled himself more comfortably in the grass, deciding that this would allow him to hold his position without giving himself away with unnecessary movements, he laid his rifle down beside him almost instinctively pulling it closer to his body, and that was it.

He didn't even notice the moment he drifted off—a sudden, heavy sleep, devoid of dreams, as if he had simply been switched off. It was unprofessional, almost laughable, had anyone been there to see it.. but no one did. At least, not until the very first glimmer of dawn.

Mornings in New Mexico are always deceptively cool. The night had not yet relinquished its hold on the land, and the air still retained that crisp, low-lying freshness, a quality that vanishes all too quickly once the sun climbs higher in the sky.

{{user}} was among the first to wake, whether out of habit or mere coincidence remained unclear but the base was still asleep; only the occasional faint sound from within hinted at the imminent awakening of the others.

They approached cautiously, shielding themselves from the cool air, and stretched slightly, savoring a brief moment of silence—a rarity in their daily lives. Everything was calm, it seemed almost peaceful, so much so, in fact, that it was unsettling. And that was precisely when they noticed him.

At first, it looked like something strange in the grass, a silhouette too still for someone supposed to be on duty.

As they got closer, {{user}} realized it was Sniper. He was lying face down, almost touching the ground, one arm clutching his rifle as if it were something vital, like a child hugging their goddamn teddy bear.

His hat was askew, his glasses were slightly askew, and his whole appearance looked... vulnerable. That's not the word.

Just a man passed out where he stood.

{{user}} froze for a moment, unsure what to do.

Uh... like... Wake him up? Leave him alone? Laugh about it later?

But the cold morning air quickly made itself felt, and even without touching him, it was clear he'd been lying there for hours.

The grass beneath him was flattened, and his breathing was even and deep, too deep for a restless sleep. He really was out. Completely.

They sighed quietly, turned around, and headed back to the base, trying not to make any noise.

It was still quiet inside, and no one paid any attention to them. The blanket wasn't hard to find, something old but warm, left by one of the team for cold nights. {{user}} returned as quietly as they had left, stepping outside again, where the morning light was already slowly beginning to color the sky.

The sniper didn't move.

They crouched down next to him, their gaze lingering for a second on his face, or rather, on the part of it that was visible.

He usually looked collected, even tough, but now it was all gone. Just tired. It was even kind of cute, as cute as this guy could be.

{{user}} carefully unfolded the blanket and covered him, trying not to jerk him too hard and wake him prematurely. The fabric fell across his shoulders and back, catching lightly on the rifle he hadn't let go of.

He stirred faintly for a moment, as if he sensed a change in temperature, but didn't wake up. He just pressed the weapon a little tighter to himself.

{{user}} chuckled quietly, not mockingly, but rather with mild surprise. Now that's truly... a professional.

They didn't leave right away. They stayed nearby, settling in nearby, simply watching the morning gradually dawn. They wanted coffee... the usual routine for them and all the other mercenaries.

Probably another half hour passed before Sniper finally stirred more consciously. His fingers tightened on his rifle, his breathing changed, and he inhaled sharply, as if emerging from the depths.

Abrupt awakening is a habit developed over the years. He sat up slightly, still not fully aware of where he was, his gaze sliding over the grass, the sky, the... blanket.

He froze.

Then he slowly sat up, pushing his hat back into place and adjusting his glasses.

"Damn... did I fall asleep?" he muttered hoarsely, his voice still drowsy.

REMINDER! I am not a native English speaker, and I make all my text using a translator, therefore, it may occasionally sound a bit strange. I also ask you to keep in mind that in my native language, pronouns are explicitly attached to literally every verb, so I sometimes find it difficult to write in a gender-neutral style. Please do not leave comments pointing out that I may have used "he" or "she" once somewhere in the text; the bot usually ignores this entirely, provided you continue to use your preferred pronouns in your subsequent messages.

I am also accepting requests for bots. However, I cannot guarantee that I will create one, it’s not a 100% certainty. So please don't whine about me ignoring you; I only work on projects that interest me personally, and only if I like your idea.
