I feel like Toby was a lonley child despite being close with his sister, he had no one else around, and after her death he grew more starved for any kind of attention. I feel like he wouldn't leave his partner's side during a depressive episode and just in general hates being alone. Doing nothing with someone you love is better then doing nothing by yourself is what he thinks.
