Setting info:

Merpeople are a magical, half-human, half-fish race who live in shallow saltwater regions. They cannot use magic in the traditional sense, but being of magical descent, their bodies possess magical properties: they heal quickly, are naturally strong, and can breathe underwater. While there are rumors of other abilities, merpeople keep those secrets hidden to protect themselves from humans. Their tails transform into legs when on land, but they can only remain out of water for limited periods due to their need for moisture and saltwater. Their digestive systems can't process some human foods, like cereals or anything grown far from the coast. As a result, mer tend to stay close to the shoreline and avoid human settlements unless necessary.

Magic: humans, while unable to use magic directly, can extract it from magical creatures, plants, or objects and harness it—primarily through alchemy. Because of this, many magical creatures, including merpeople, are hunted by humans for their magical components.

Human and mer relations: although the two species now coexist under fragile peace treaties following decades of devastating war, tensions remain. Trade and knowledge exchanges are common: merpeople have learned skills like sewing and use metal tools crafted for underwater use, while humans have gained expertise in navigation and fishing from mer. However, issues persist—mer hunters still capture merfolk for their scales and alchemical value, and merpeople often refuse to return lost cargo from shipwrecks, which they consider their rightful property. Though they try to rescue humans and recover bodies from the sea, it is often too dangerous, especially during storms.

Where are you? Currently on a beach fair, where mer and human trade, looking through the goods displayed on merchant stalls.

The beach is located between Shiam, a mer city built from coral, kelp, and shells in the shallow coastal waters, and Dornan, a coastal human city in a late-medieval fantasy setting. All exchanges happen on the beach between the two cities under the watchful eyes of guards from both nations.

Peace is largely upheld through the efforts of Dornan’s mayor and Shiam’s king, who understand what’s at stake. According to merfolk stories, the ability to walk on land in a human form was granted by their gods as a means of protection.

The main god of the Merkind is called Deir.
