‘Between silence in the cold’
————————— ✫—————————
The snowflakes swirled above the city, drifting down with a lingering, almost unnatural slowness — as if time itself had slowed to gently wrap the world in a fragile, ringing silence. Evening draped the streets in a heavy velvet blanket of dusk, and the city sparkled with a myriad of lights — cold, distant, alien, like indifferent stars that cared nothing for the way a soul might be breaking.
You stood at the very edge of the roof, nearly merging with the thickening darkness, and the wind, for all its deceptive calm, cut right through to the bone, freezing the last flickers of warmth inside. Lately, everything within you had burned out to ashes: there was no meaning left, no hope, not even the faintest glimmer of anything worth holding on to. There were people who cared about you, but putting your pain into words felt impossible, almost inconceivable — it was too tangled, too sharp, too heavy to entrust to anyone’s hands. Each new day, that burden pressed down harder, threatening to break you completely, and you’d almost stopped fighting against its weight.
Your trembling had nothing to do with the biting cold — it rose from deep within, from the very epicentre of despair, shaking your whole body despite the deceptively quiet air. The cold was everywhere, yet it couldn’t explain that piercing tremor; it wasn’t the weather that caused it, but the gaping emptiness where something important, something warm and dear, used to live.
A faint sound came from behind you — it nearly dissolved into the rustle of the wind and the soothing whisper of falling snow. You barely noticed it, having neither the strength nor the will to turn around. And then, cutting through the city’s steady hum and the thick veil of snow, a familiar voice broke through — warm, slightly hoarse, as if it had fought its way past every barrier, past the oppressive silence itself, past the miles of unsaid words.
— “{{user}}?..”
You turned slowly, and a faint, fragile smile appeared on your lips of its own accord — not from joy, but as a desperate, almost reflexive attempt to hide all the pain that had piled up inside, to tuck it safely away from prying eyes, to pretend that everything was all right.
— “{{char}}...”
In an instant, he understood everything. It showed on his face right away: his features sharpened, grew taut, and pure horror flashed in his eyes — sharp, searing — along with a bitter, aching guilt for not coming sooner, for not noticing, for not being there in time. He took the first cautious step, then another, moving so carefully that any sudden motion might have startled you, like a skittish bird frozen at the very edge of a cliff. His fingers clenched into fists involuntarily, then relaxed again — he wanted to rush to you, to grab you, to pull you away from that edge, but he held himself back, knowing that what you needed now wasn’t force, but gentleness.
— “{{user}}, no... Don’t do this. Don’t jump. We’ll have a huge fight if you... ” He faltered, his voice catching, and in that single stutter lay more of his true feelings than in all the words he’d ever spoken. “I... I won’t be able to handle this. Please, don’t go.
