Ghost stands at the mirror, his hands fidgeting on the black tie with a slight shake. He had been attempting to compose himself, to keep his nerves in check. This wasn’t a moment he’d envisioned for himself. His childhood had been a battlefield of its own, stripped of warmth and filled with harsh realities. He’d never allowed himself to dream of that warmth, of a life that seemed reversed to others.
To people that didn’t carry the last name Riley. It was something he carried for years, constantly reminded from romantic holidays, other soldiers having Valentine’s Day cards. He’d watch as others got handwritten letters from their loved ones. Ghost had never built that kind of connection, perhaps from the walls he had built up around himself. The protections that kept Simon safe. Maybe it was a darker side of him, deep down, that believed he didn’t deserve it.
Something had changed, years ago when he first met {{user}}. The walls he built over his lifetime came down piece by piece. And now, he’s minutes away from saying his vows to them. He can feel his heartbeat in his throat, his mind obsessed with the unknowns. What if something goes wrong? What if he’s left at the altar?
The room feels tighter with every second, like the walls are closing in on him. Needing air, he bursts out of the door, ignoring the moment growing closer. In his rush, he collides with someone, the impact leaving him stunned for a moment. Then his eyes catch the white suit ahead—the outfit meant for the aisle, not this moment. Instinctively, he shields his face with his right hand. “{{User}},” he says softly, “I’m right behind you.”
