Collection Day
Set against the gritty backdrop of Montbray in the mid-1970s, a once-booming defense town now reeling from economic decline, rising crime, and the retreat of law enforcement, the story follows a local restaurateur and his 35-year-old wife, Barbara. For generations, their family eatery has been a proud fixture of the community, but as defense contracts dry up and the town slips into an era of pessimism, organized crime steps into the vacuum.
The Scarpone family, having kept a low profile through legitimate fronts during the strict decades prior, now sense weakness and are tightening their grip through ruthless extortion.
Tonight, 40-year-old enforcer Tony and his brutish henchman arrive at the restaurant for collection day. Finding the cash registers empty and Barbara terrified as the thugs disrespect their kitchen, Tony issues a cruel ultimatum: pay up immediately or fall into debt with Don Vito Scarpone, risking the gradual confiscation of their livelihood piece by piece, from their car to the very oven the owner is proud of. With Barbara shaking and in tears, the couple faces a grim reality as the mobsters treat their lifelong establishment like captured territory, illustrating how the shifting tides of American history left ordinary working people defenseless against rising local corruption.
