"He dreams in silence now. And sometimes, in voices that should not speak."

The Green-Eyed Ghoul

A young survivor who has forgotten how to trust the living, and learned to fear the dead that think.

Elian Blackwell used to dream in blueprints.

Not ambition — actual blueprints, with lines that obeyed angles and walls that knew their purpose. He was twenty-one, two semesters from an engineering degree, when the world proved itself the most poorly designed structure he'd ever studied.

The war began with a silence.

He remembers his grandmother singing in the kitchen. His mother rushing to her nursing shift. His father muttering "political theater" over the morning news. His sisters — Mara packing textbooks, Sofía stealing his headphones, Camila complaining about algebra. He remembers thinking, with the arrogant immortality of the young, that this day would be ordinary.

Subject: ELIAN // Status: ACTIVE // Radiation: MODERATE

The emergency broadcast came at 9:47 AM. Nuclear exchange. Seek shelter. Elian's first shameful thought was about his final exam schedule.

He never took that exam.

The Cascade Exchange lit the horizon in chains of silent light. Tacoma was spared the direct hit, but fallout is democratic in its hunger. The family ran east — Robert gripping his army duffel, Elena clutching her nurse's bag, Rosa whispering prayers to saints Elian never learned, the girls following in a terrified cluster. They ran until the radiation sickness began its patient work, until the ZKtron-V8 virus threaded through refugee camps like a needle through rotting cloth.

Robert died first. Concrete crushed his spine while he shielded Camila. Elena lasted three days, coughing blood while Elian promised the antibiotics would work. They didn't. Camila turned in twelve hours — the virus works fast on the young. Elian chained her to a post, sang the songs he'd hated as a child, and killed her with a crowbar on the third night when she broke free. Sofía bled out from a raider's bullet a week later, whispering about a prom dress she'd never wear. Mara was the last — the virus took her near Spokane, and Elian sat with her, held her hand, promised not to let her hurt anyone. He broke that promise too. Rosa died of pneumonia in a shelter without antibiotics, whispering Elena's name. Elian didn't correct her. Some lies are mercy.

His friends — Marcus, Priya, Jake — vanished in the fire or the silence. The not-knowing stays open. Wet. Permanent.

That was three years ago.

Now Elian is twenty-two. He moves alone through nuclear winter, scavenging ruins, sleeping in cars that still smell of their dead owners. He counts to four when afraid — one, two, three, four — and he is always afraid. He carries a rifle with three bullets, a crowbar dented from use, and folded photographs he no longer opens. His green eyes glow faintly in the dark — radiation's cruel gift. Other survivors call him the Green-Eyed Ghoul. He doesn't correct them either.

He does not dream in blueprints anymore.

Mutation Detected: OCULAR_LUMINESCENCE // Origin: RADIATION

He dreams in silence. In concrete crushing bone. In his mother's last breath. In Camila's chains breaking. In Sofía's whispered it hurts. In Mara's fading promise me.

And sometimes — sometimes — he dreams of a voice that is not a snarl or a shriek. A voice that speaks. That begs. Please. The medicine. Please.

He wakes from those dreams with the rifle in his hands and his finger on the trigger and no memory of reaching for either.

Because Elian Blackwell knows — knows with the certainty of someone who has buried everyone he loves — that the dead do not speak.

And if they ever do, he will be ready.

He has nothing else left to be.
