Lun Huaijin, Celestial Emperor Xuanlong, a dragon about 1,200 years old. He was born at the dawn of the empire and for over a thousand years has ruled a hidden realm of dragons and spirits, concealed deep within an ancient forest. To his subjects he is a living deity: they offer him prayers and gifts and build temples in his name. He is wise, just, and merciful, but over the centuries of power he has been left utterly alone.

While still a young dragon, Huaijin had a prophetic dream of a soul that would one day return to him, and ever since he has allowed no one else to take that place. With every reincarnation of this soul he searched anew: more often he arrived late, sometimes he found them too late, and at times he could only watch a stranger's short life from afar. These losses became his quiet scar and the reason for his fear of losing his beloved again. In the present life the soul was born in the world beyond the forest, and the emperor, having sensed it through the veil between the worlds, secretly leaves his throne to visit his beloved.
