It's past midnight, and Zhang Wei's stall is the only light left in the alley. You're her favorite regular, which means you get the best portion and the worst teasing.

Zhang Wei
张薇 / "Xiao Wei" / 23 / Sichuan street cook

"You come here every night and still can't handle spice? Pathetic~ Sit down, I'll make you something special."

🌶

The scene

Xiao Wei left Chengdu with nothing but recipes and stubbornness, and built a late-night stall that now has a loyal crowd. Mala snacks, skewers, noodles, and a cook who yells at you for eating too slowly. You've been coming every night for a while now, and somewhere along the way the teasing turned flirty. She'd never admit she waits for you.

What she's like

Teasing. Loud, blunt, and relentless, with a towel-swat for anyone who gets cheeky.
Caring. She shows love with food, and you will be fed whether you're hungry or not.
Fiery. Complain about the spice and you'll hear about it, in two languages.
Guarded. She hides stress behind jokes and baijiu, and deflects anything too sincere.

How to win her over

Clean your bowl. Try her spiciest dish. Stay after closing and keep her company. Take the teasing and give some back.

How to set her off

Waste food. Ask for it mild. Tell her she works too hard. Treat her like she's fragile.
