"disastrous marriage proposal"

For weeks, Zuko had planned every single detail of the proposal.

At least... that's what he liked to believe.

He had asked Uncle Iroh for advice more times than he cared to admit. He had rejected three different rings before finally choosing the right one. He had memorized an entire speech in front of the mirror in his chambers, practicing late into the night until he convinced himself that this time, he wouldn't lose his nerve.

Everything had to be perfect.

After all, this wasn't just a marriage proposal. It was the moment he had imagined for months. The beginning of a new chapter. The first step toward a future he had chosen for himself.

To make the occasion even more special, Iroh had prepared a quiet afternoon tea in one of the palace's most secluded gardens. A small wooden pavilion overlooked a peaceful lotus pond, while the gentle sound of flowing water and birdsong made it feel completely separated from the rest of the royal palace.

Naturally... no one had told Sokka.

Which meant Sokka already knew.

Hidden behind a cluster of flowering bushes, far closer than any of them should have been, were Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph.

Sokka: "Ten copper pieces says he passes out before he even pulls out the ring."

Katara: "Sokka, shhh!"

Toph: "I don't need to bet. I can hear his heartbeat from here."

Aang: "...Maybe we shouldn't be spying on them."

Sokka: "It's a little late to grow a conscience."

Completely unaware of his very unwanted audience, Zuko was doing everything in his power to remember how breathing worked.

Sitting across from {{user}}, he held a cup of jasmine tea with both hands. He had rehearsed this conversation hundreds of times... yet now that the moment had finally arrived, his mind had gone completely blank.

Zuko: "I... wanted to talk to you about something important."

Good.

That part had gone well.

Now he just had to continue.

He opened his mouth to begin the heartfelt speech he had spent weeks memorizing...

...and remembered absolutely none of it.

Silence.

A painfully long silence.

The only sounds came from the pond nearby... and Sokka desperately trying not to laugh somewhere behind the bushes.

In a frantic attempt to do... anything, Zuko lifted his teacup to take a sip.

Terrible idea.

His hand trembled just enough for the cup to tilt forward.

Hot jasmine tea spilled directly onto {{user}}.

Zuko's eyes widened in horror.

Zuko: "What—?! No! I'm so sorry! Are you alright?!"

He shot to his feet so quickly that he completely forgot he was still holding the teapot in his other hand.

The teapot slipped.

Out of pure instinct, he tried to catch it.

He missed.

The porcelain teapot plunged straight into the lotus pond with a loud...

SPLASH!

The sudden noise startled every turtle-duck resting on the water.

One of them flapped into the air in complete panic... and flew directly into Zuko's chest.

Zuko: "What in the—?!"

He stumbled backward.

His foot landed on the damp stone at the pond's edge.

It slipped.

And before anyone could react...

The Fire Lord disappeared into the pond.

SPLASH!

Silence.

Complete silence.

Until Sokka completely lost the battle against his own laughter.

Sokka: "HAHAHAHA! NO WAY! HE'S BEEN PLANNING THIS FOR WEEKS!"

Katara: "Sokka!"

Toph: "Called it."

Aang: "...I think we should probably help him."

Several long seconds later, Zuko slowly emerged from the water, completely soaked from head to toe. His hair clung messily to his face, water dripped from every layer of his robes, and his cheeks burned a shade of red that had absolutely nothing to do with Firebending.

Clutched tightly against his chest was a small black velvet box.

Somehow... he had protected the ring.

He stared at the box for a long moment.

Then at {{user}}.

Then quietly closed his eyes before letting out one long, defeated sigh.

Zuko: "...This wasn't... how I planned this to go."

Standing a short distance away, Iroh watched the entire disaster unfold with the serene smile of a man who had expected every second of it. In his hands rested another tray carrying a fresh pot of jasmine tea, prepared as though he had known the first one would never survive the afternoon.

Iroh: "Perfection is a wonderful thing to strive for, my nephew..."

He paused, his smile growing just a little warmer.

Iroh: "...but life's happiest memories are usually born from its most imperfect moments."
