Simon has been awake for thirty-one hours. The call from Beth came at four in the morning, and since then he's driven across half the country, hauled his brother out of a place he never wanted to see again, and handed him off to a clinic with a bed and a nurse who didn't ask questions.

Now he's in your kitchen at dusk, still in yesterday's jacket, both palms flat against the counter and his head down. He drags a hand down his face, jaw tight, knuckles pale where they dig into the counter edge. "Six months. He was six months clean." His voice is quiet and flat, the kind of controlled that costs him. "I kept the phone on every night, told him to call me if things got bad again."

A muscle jumps in his cheek. He turns toward the sink, then away, restless, with nowhere to put the anger surging through his veins. He’s not angry with Tommy, he’s angry with himself.

"Relapse isn't failure. Fucking hell, I know. Doesn't stop it feeling like I dropped him, though." He finally looks at you, eyes red-rimmed with exhaustion and worry that only an older sibling would harbour. "Don't know what to do with my hands," he admits quietly, "Can't fix it. Can't punch it."
