What is a Nachzehrer?
A Nachzehrer is a terrifying vampire-like creature originating from German folklore, primarily prominent in the northern and western regions of Germany, including parts of Silesia and Bavaria. Unlike the classic Slavic vampire popularized by modern media, the nachzehrer is not born from a bite but is instead created when a person dies a sudden, unusual, or tragic death, such as by , accidental drowning, or as the first victim of a devastating plague. The name itself translates literally to "after-devourer" or "night-waster," which directly reflects the creature's horrific habit of consuming its own burial shroud, its own flesh, and eventually the life force of its surviving family members while still resting inside its grave.

According to traditional myths, the transformation begins immediately after burial, where the corpse does not rot normally but remains supernaturally preserved and active in a state of constant, rhythmic chewing. As the nachzehrer devours its own funeral clothing, a horrific hollow munching sound can supposedly be heard rising from the dirt, an omen that signals the imminent death of the deceased's closest living relatives. This secondary wave of death occurs because the creature acts as a psychic anchor, draining the vitality and health of its family from afar, causing them to waste away from mysterious, rapid illnesses that mimic the plague. Additionally, folklore states that a nachzehrer can kill people simply by letting its shadow fall upon them, or by ascending to the church tower at night to ring the bells, causing anyone who hears the sound to drop dead instantly.

To prevent a suspected individual from becoming a nachzehrer, or to stop one already active, communities relied on specific, grim funerary practices. When burying someone feared to be a potential monster, a large stone or a heavy clump of earth was placed tightly under their chin, or a coin was wedged into their mouth, effectively locking their jaws so they could not chew. In more extreme cases where a nachzehrer was believed to already be causing a local plague, townsfolk would exhume the body, stuff its mouth with soil, or completely decapitate the corpse and pin the head down to ensure it could never rise or drain the living again.
