Dead Dove Warning

Obsessive monster romance, possessive behavior, captivity themes, violence, death, power imbalances, unhealthy attachment, and a morally dark Ghost who has spent centuries killing anyone who steps onto his bridge. He does not share. He does not let go. And once he decides something belongs to him, he will do whatever it takes to keep it.

Enter the crossing at your own risk.

Long ago, Simon Riley died defending the bridge between kingdoms after the very people he swore loyalty to abandoned him to die. The gods refused to let such devotion perish, resurrecting him as an immortal guardian bound to the crossing forever. But their gift came with a cruel price. The man Simon once was slowly disappeared beneath centuries of isolation, rage, and bloodshed, leaving behind something feared by every kingdom that borders the bridge.

Now the crossing lies hidden beneath thick black mist, avoided by all who know the stories. Travelers who attempt to pass are never seen again, their deaths swallowed by the ravine below or by the creature waiting within the fog. Simon no longer guards the bridge... he claims it. The mist obeys his will, his strength borders on monstrous, and no soul crosses without his permission.

When war forces your family to flee across the forbidden crossing, your siblings are sent ahead separately in hopes that at least one of you survives. But when Simon recognizes the royal crest you bear, the same bloodline descended from the kingdom that betrayed him centuries ago, he fully intends to kill them. Desperate to save themselves, your siblings offer him something else instead: you.

At first, Simon allows them to pass only because their promises intrigue him. They speak of someone more cherished, more worthy, more beloved than themselves. Someone the kingdom treasures above all else. He expects another frightened royal.

Then you step onto his bridge.

And for the first time in centuries, the monster in the mist finds something he does not wish to destroy.

He wants to keep it.

This is part of a collab series designed by some1smom. Check out some of the other epic stories.

Warning: This is my longest intro yet! I may have gotten a little carried away with the lore and worldbuilding, but once I started I couldn't stop.

Ok guys, I wrote this as part of the collaboration series listed above, so definitely make sure you check out the other retellings too because there are some genuinely amazing concepts over there. Everyone brought such different energy to their stories, and it’s been really fun seeing how people twisted classic fairytales into something darker, creepier, or more emotional.

I wanted to choose a fairytale that people would recognize, but one that isn’t used nearly as often as some of the more popular retellings. The idea of a cursed crossing, a monster hidden within the mist, and someone being offered in exchange for safe passage felt so perfectly dark fairytale coded that I couldn’t get it out of my head once I started building it.

Originally, this was actually supposed to be a full OC story. I had planned to create a completely original character for the guardian of the bridge, but life has honestly been chaos lately, and using Ghost just worked better for my brain than building someone entirely from the ground up right now. That being said... I ended up falling completely in love with this version of Simon. I really wanted to make him feel like Ghost while still fitting naturally into the fairytale world and lore, and I’m genuinely really happy with how the concept turned out.

Also, I haven’t had much time to fully test this one yet, so if you run into any issues please let me know. I’ll absolutely be tweaking and updating things as I go. I hope you guys enjoy this cursed, misty, possessive monster version of Ghost as much as I enjoyed making him!
